[REVIEW] The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

Friday, July 6, 2018

Hi!

In today's post I am going to talk about a skincare product from probably the most affordable yet effective skincare line in the market, and I am sure that most of you may have heard about this brand before. I was hesitant at first to try the products from The Ordinary, and I admit that I was afraid that all the hype about the product from this brand was simply just a gimmick. But, after doing some research and also checking the ingredients of the products that I was interested to try, I am sold!

So, this is how the hyaluronic acid 2% + B5 serum from The Ordinary looks like

It has a 12 month shelf life after opening.

Ingredients (taken from the website
Aqua (Water), Sodium Hyaluronate, Pentylene Glycol, Propanediol, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Panthenol, Ahnfeltia Concinna Extract, Glycerin, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Citric Acid, Isoceteth-20, Ethoxydiglycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hexylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol.

The ingredients are alcohol free, sulfate free, paraben free, and also fragrance free! Sodium hyaluronate is listed as the second in the ingredients, meaning that it is the second to the largest concentration present in the ingredients. In addition, in the first 10 ingredients, it also includes sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer, panthenol (a form of vitamin B5), and glycerin. Hence, after breaking down the ingredients, the title of this product (supposedly) is not a gimmick because this product are simply made from hyaluronic acid.

Now, I should mention that I was never interested in any hyaluronic acid product. I simply just don't trust the advertisement made saying that HA can attract up to 1,000 times its weight in water. And hold up a second, while that statement its true, and it also looks like a very promising product especially for dehydrated skin, we should think about it logically. Hyaluronic acid is a very big molecule, in fact, this molecule is too big to be penetrated into the skin. A high molecular weight of HA will only sit on the surface of your skin, only providing temporary hydration. I am not saying that it is a bad idea, but it just that it doesn't provide a real, deep hydration to the skin. So, what made me interested in trying this out?

This brand uses hyaluronic acid from several different molecular weight, as well as sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer. Sodim hyaluronate crosspolymer is a smaller molecule than hyaluronic acid, and it is able to lock moisture into the skin for a deeper and longer hydration. For more explanation, you read it here.

Moving on to the texture, it is very lightweight and very liquidy, although it's not watery. It absorbs well into the skin, but I should say that it still leave a little bit of sticky feeling after application.

THE VERDICT
And based on my one month experience using this serum, I like it but not love it. I use it religiously day and night, and I do feel an improvement on my skin hydration level. I feel that my skin is more hydrated, my skin is also softer and more plump than before! I used to have dry spots on my face (despite having such a super oily face, I know, ridiculous), but I noticed that my dry spots are now gone. However, sometimes when I used my pimple spot treatment (I used 10% benzoyl peroxide), I still do get dry spot in the areas where I applied the pimple spot treatment, even though I already applied this serum. So, I guess this serum is not a very powerful hydration serum, but is definitely a good one. If you're looking for something to increase your hydration level, then you should try this one out, especially it retails at a very affordable price for a serum. However, if you have an extremely dehydrated skin like me, or dry skin, then this product isn't for you. Moreover, personally, the only 'meh' thing about this product is probably that it still leave a sticky feeling after applying. Although its still considerable, I like to do layering on my skincare regime, so it's a bit of a problem to me because then it affect how the other products feel on my skin. But, if you are not planning to use a lot other products on your face, I think it should be good for you. I think this product will be suitable for normal to oily skin, though.

Rate: 4/5

Repurchase? Maybe no. I'd like to have a stronger hydration serum because my skin is severely dehydrated.

    1. Hi, Clare! Thanks for reading. Yeah, I thought this serum isn't so special, it's just an average serum, although the price is very affordable. Have you tried any serum from them?

Anyway, I'm happy that it works wonderfully for you!
