[REVIEW] BIORE UV AQUA RICH WATERY ESSENCE SPF 50+ PA++++

Sunday, July 1, 2018

Hello, everyone!

So, how was the weekend? I hope y'all are doing great.

In today's post, I am going to talk about the infamous sunscreen from Biore, which is the UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+ PA++++ (Yeah, I know. It such a long name for a sunscreen!).

I was always afraid to try out sunscreen because I have a really oily skin, and so far all of the sunscreens that I've tried, ended up making me look more oily throughout the day. Or, in another case, since I also have a VERY sensitive skin (no joke), it ended up making my skin to be more problematic than she already is. And by saying problematic, I mean those gross whiteheads that suddenly keep appearing. However, we all know that sunscreen is a vital part of our skincare regime, right? That is why, I give this baby a try.

Let's take a look on the packaging.

It comes in a tube with a lid on the bottom.

Now, let's take a look at the ingredients:
Water, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, lauryl methacrylate/sodium methacrylate crosspolymer, C12-15 alkyl benzoate, bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, dimethicone, ethylhexyl triazone, silica dimethyl silylate, dipropylene glycol, xylitol, dextrin palmitate, acrylates/C10-30 acrylate crosspolymer, dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer, polysilicone-9, glyceryl stearate, aminomethyl propanol, dimethicone/methicone silsesquioxane crosspolymer, agar, isoceteth-20, C30-45 alkyl methicone, polyvinyl alcohol, C30-45 olefin, sodium hydroxide, butylene glycol, propylene glycol, sodium hyaluronate, royal jelly extract, orange fruit extract, grapefruit extract, lemon fruit extract, phenoxyethanol, disodium EDTA, BHT, fragrance.

Looking at the overall ingredients, this product is alcohol free, sulfate free and also paraben free. Now, in terms of the UV filters, this product contains:
  • Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (Supposedly protects the skin from sunburn by absorbing UVB rays from the sun, and readily absorbed by the skin. However, this ingredient isn't the preferred sunscreen ingredients.)
  • Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl
  • Diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate
  • Ethylhexyl triazone
In consideration, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate isn't the preferred ingredients for a sunscreen because although it is an approved active ingredients, many studies show that this ingredients is hazardous and poses many risks. According to EWG, the high risks imposed by this ingredient includes biochemical or cellular level changes and endocrine disruption. It can also lead to cellular signaling disruption and also cell death. However, the 3 other UV filter ingredients are fine and are safer to use because it doesn't show any hazardous impacts.

In addition, for those having sensitive skin like me, I think you should be careful with this sunscreen because it contains orange fruit and lemon fruit extract, it also contains fragrance. Although these ingredients are listed at the bottom, it should be taken into consideration because these ingredients are potentially irritating for sensitive skin. Also, in my personal experience, when I used this sunscreen, I always got tiny bumps on my forehead, which is very unpleasant. That's why, I think this product isn't made for sensitive skin. (But, I agree that this sunscreen does smell fruity and fresh.)

But, I can say that the consistency is a win. It is very watery, and so a little goes along the way. It is also very lightweight, it absorb to the skin super well, and it doesn't feel sticky or whatsoever. This sunscreen is also great for use under make up! And as a girl who have a very oily skin, the finish of this sunscreen is pretty matte. It also doesn't make my skin more oily, which I very like, and this sunscreen isn't moisturizing nor drying. So, I think this sunscreen is suitable for oily, normal and dry skin.

The Verdict:

Honestly though, despite the great consistency (which probably is the only thing I like from this sunscreen), I wouldn't be repurchasing this sunscreen. I really hate it when I get tiny bumps on my forehead, and I also worry about the UV filter ingredient on this product which is the Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (Octinoxate). As I said before, although that this chemical sunscreen ingredient is approved worldwide, including the US, but the safety of this ingredient is still very debatable since it imposed risks to humans. This sunscreen is also definitely not made for those with sensitive skin. Thus, I think this sunscreen isn't worth the hype, especially knowing the facts behind the ingredients listed.

Rate: 2.5/5! :(

Anyway, have you guys tried this sunscreen? I would like to know your thoughts!
